But how do you go on? It's an age-old question everyone faces during a time of grief.
Crying is one form of release that enables people to begin healing. On 9-11, it seemed all
of America cried. And so it is that a book got its title: 911: The Day America
Cried
and another form of release and healing was created out of the ashes of despair.
More than 80 authors from across the nation and a few from Canada, including several
groups of children, wrote to release their pain about the events of 9-11 and compiled their
collection of poems, letters, and stories into a book that will continue to bring hope to our
nation now more than one year after that tragic day. The proceeds of the book will
benefit The Todd M. Beamer Foundation, an organization founded by Beamer's wife and
family to begin "a new era of hope" and to continue Todd's legacy of hope, courage, and
faith. The book is called 911: The Day America
Cried, A collection of poems, letters,
and stories on an American tragedy, ISBN 0-9713266-5-7, 288 pages, $15.95 U.S.,
published by Obadiah Press—and it is all about healing the pain.
It is the authors' hope that as their writing about their feelings helped them to heal, so,
too, will reading these stories that reflect the fears, pain, grief, and anguish born of that
day—and then also the hope, patriotism, and pride in America and in being an American
that also came forth from the rubble of devastation—give many others tremendous
comfort and further their healing, as well. The book's editor, Tina L. Miller, says she
hopes it will bring Americans even further—"by bringing them hope."
"The Todd M. Beamer Foundation was created with hope," she says. "This book was
written and published in a spirit of hope. And reading the stories written by our nation's
children—and others—reaffirm for me that there is indeed a great deal of hope for all of
us."
"…You will be especially touched by the short stories written by the children," agrees
Doug MacMillan, Executive Director of The Todd M. Beamer Foundation. "Their
unique perspective on the events of September 11 reminds us that today's children are
tomorrow's heroes, capable of positively impacting our world for the good of others."
