Page Layout and Usability
Introduction

by Brandon Jubar

There are two major categories the elements of Web usability can be classified as: (i) Site Layout elements and (ii) Page Layout elements. To use an automobile as a metaphor, the Site Layout is the engine, transmission and drive train. The Page Layout is the body style, interior design and everything else that makes the car 'look' the way it does.

Once you have completed the groundwork for the layout of your Parish Web site, it is time to dive into the layout of the pages themselves. In this series of articles, I will not focus on the traditional elements of design, such as typography, color schemes and proper use of graphics. What I will focus on are some fundamentals of good page design, including:  the effective use of screen space, designing for multiple browsers, achieving good page load times and building better links.
