On a Personal Note...
by Brandon Jubar

FREE WILL

We were watching the movie "Bruce Almighty", and there is a part where Bruce (Jim Carrey) asks God (Morgan Freeman), "How do you make someone love you without affecting free will?"

"Welcome to my world," God replies. "If you come up with an answer to that one, you let me know."

It was an interesting line. We talk about an all-knowing, all-powerful God, and in the very next breath, we talk about Him granting us free will. If you stop to think about it, how incredible is that?!

In Exodus 1:15-21, the king of Egypt tells the midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, to kill all of the boys birthed by Hebrew women. The midwives, though they are slaves, exercise free will and choose not to follow his orders.

But what if they had done as they were told? What if they had killed the boys as they were being born? They probably wouldn't have been held accountable in this world. After all, they are merely slaves doing their masters' bidding, right?

Maybe what it comes down to is "free will" rather than "freedom". A person can be jailed -- can lose his freedom -- and not give up his free will. He may not be able to walk freely about the country, but he doesn't have to act contrary to his beliefs.

Likewise, a family may live in poverty -- not having the freedom to buy what they want -- and not give up their free will. They may not be able to drive fancy cars and live in a posh neighborhood, but they do not have to act contrary to their beliefs.

Of course, with freedom comes responsibility. Once we admit to having free will -- the ability to choose and control our own actions -- we must accept accountability for those actions. We can't claim that we were just following orders or other such rubbish.

We have to own our choices, especially if one of them is to choose to NOT love God.

"Who," you ask, "would choose to NOT love God?"

Unfortunately, the answer is "lots of people."
But we'll talk about that next week.

Peace,
~Brandon
