Politics and Religion (revisited)
Every time I turn around, someone is complaining about politics.
This candidate, that policy, such-and-such a bill, whining
liberals, money-grubbing conservatives, blah-blah-blah...
I swear at least 90% of the people I encounter complain about our
government (and half of them know exactly how to fix everything).
But wait...
If only 30% of eligible voters ACTUALLY voted, then two-thirds of
the complainers I encounter should just shut up!
You know what I think? I think Congress should pass a law that
says if you don't vote, you can't complain. Period. On the other
hand, if you cared enough to get out and exercise your right to
vote -- a right that far too many Americans take for granted --
then by all means, complain to your heart's content.
I guess it comes down to one question: What have you done?
And it's no different when it comes to the church.
I've heard people say, "The music just isn't energizing enough. I
went to my sister's Parish and the music just fired me up! Why
don't we ever play anything like that?"
Okay. I give up. Why don't we?
Did you ask? Have you actually said anything to the Music
Minister? Or the Pastor? Did you bother to find out what hymnal
your sister's Parish uses? Did you talk to their Music Minister
about ways we could liven up the music at our liturgy?
The answer to all of those questions, of course, is "no".
I've heard people say, "Our Parish just isn't very welcoming. I
went to St. So-and-so a couple weeks ago, and everyone was warm
and friendly. Why can't our Parish be like that?
Okay. I give up. Why can't it?
Do you greet people around you before mass? Do you sit in a
different spot so you can meet different people? Have you offered
to be a greeter at the door? Or asked the Pastor if there is
anything you can do to help in the area of hospitality? Did you
ask your family and friends to be more welcoming at mass?
Again, the answer to these questions is "no".
I could go on, but I won't. I think you probably get my point.
There is so much that needs to be done in our Parishes, but
people would rather spend their time complaining than actually
doing something constructive to improve things. That's what irks
me the most.
Politics and Religion. Don't complain about either unless you've
gotten off your duff and done your part. But I imagine that if
people actually did that, there wouldn't be a whole lot to
complain about anymore.
Peace,
~Brandon
