MICROTALK
I was walking down the "hall" in Cubeville, my thoughts on the
contract negotiation I had just completed, when he came scooting
around the corner from one of the cross aisles.
"Hey. How's it goin'?" he asked, as he scurried on by with a
troubled look on his face.
"Good. And you?"
"Great, thanks," I heard him say with as much conviction as a
child who has just been handed a plate of liver and lima beans.
Moments later, he scooted into another aisle and was gone.
These types of exchanges happen to me every day. I swap greetings
that, in a different context, would trigger a friendly dialog.
But made in passing, they are merely substitutes for "hello". It
is the epitome of small talk. Or maybe it's even smaller than
small talk. Microtalk, perhaps?
I wonder what would've happened if, in response to his original
query, I had said, "Actually, I'm glad you asked. I'm having a
rotten day! Let me tell you how it all began..."
There are times when I'm sure that my prayers amount to microtalk
with God. I say the same things, lament the same problems, offer
thanks for the same blessings, and basically regurgitate the same
stuff I've said a thousand times before.
That's why, every so often, I need to remind myself that Jesus
isn't necessarily like the people I pass in Cubeville. He is not
walking past, heading in the opposite direction, his eyes
averted. No, Jesus is walking right beside me. He's traveling in
the same direction. And his eyes are looking directly into mine.
And when Jesus asks me how it's goin', he's not making microtalk
-- he really does want an answer.
God bless you all,
~Brandon
